Hybrid Ground

A solo exhibition - Pat Younis

Existing at the intersections of alternate realities and speculative spaces is ‘Hybrid Ground’, an interactive exhibition featuring recent works by media artist Pat Younis. These metaphysical, surreal places cannot be situated in tangible time or geographical location. Instead, these uncanny and other-worldy artworks parallel the digital and natural, the utopian and the dystopian, and the physical and the virtual to construct hybrid realities or fantasy worlds.

The overlay of Augmented Reality (AR) elements aggregates new forms of cultural engagement and interactions, moving beyond the wall to provoke curiosity and activate imaginative narrative-making. The hospital can be an unfamiliar environment, full of strangers, uncertainty, and without any normal routine or control, making it difficult to navigate and exist within. The AR technology aims to rouse participatory spectatorship, facilitating a form of escapism or reprieve by layering digital experiences over the artworks to transform the clinical environment into a space for exploration and agency for play.

The exhibition includes select works made in collaboration with Sydney Children Hospital’s paediatric patients and their siblings.
